Tue June 26 – Roland Philipps – A Spy Named Donald Maclean

In our 3rd hour, Historian Roland Philipps will discuss the never-before told story of Donald Maclean, who was a British diplomat and member of the Cambridge Five who acted as spies for the Soviet Union.

BIO:

Roland Philipps is the grandson of Roger Makins, Maclean’s former boss and the last man to see him before his defection; his other grandfather was, like Maclean, a lifelong communist.

Roland Philipps worked as a publisher for thirty years, most recently as publishing director of Hodder and Stoughton and managing director of John Murray, and published a great deal of twentieth-century history which is one of his passions. He left publishing to write full time at the beginning of 2017. He currently resides in London.
